In-Depth Information
A mile east of Hugh Town, reached via the coast path around Peninnis Head , is the is-
land's former harbour at Old Town , home to a few small cafes, a village pub, a working pot-
tery and a pleasant beach. The graveyard of the nearby church contains a memorial to
Augustus Smith, founder of the Abbey Garden, as well as the grave of former prime min-
ister Harold Wilson, who often holidayed on the Scillys.
There are lots of small inlets scattered around the island's coastline, best reached on
foot or by bike, including Porth Hellick , Watermill Cove and the relatively remote Pelistry Bay . St
Mary's also has several ancient sites, notably the small Iron Age village at Halangy Down , a
mile north of Hugh Town.
