ISLES OF SCILLY
Sprinkled across the Atlantic Ocean 28 miles southwest of Land's End, the Isles of Scilly
offer a taste of what life must have been like in England a century ago. Rush-hour traffic,
trilling telephones and roadworks seem like a distant memory as soon as you set foot on
this miniature archipelago of around 140 tiny islands, only five of which are inhabited.
Peak season is from May to September, when you'll find most of the B&Bs and hotels
are fully booked weeks ahead, while many businesses simply shut down in winter. Even the
main island of St Mary's, which welcomes the vast majority of the islands' visitors, is
hardly a bustling metropolis, and the smaller islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Martin's and St
Agnes are home to just a few hardy castaways.
