In-Depth Information
Across the centre of the Lizard sprawl the barren Goonhilly Downs , home to one of the
world's largest satellite stations. For some reason the Goonhilly dishes are all named after
Arthurian characters; the oldest, Arthur, was built in 1961 and is now a listed monument.

CARAVAN, CAMPSITE £
Lovelane Caravans
( www.lovelanecaravans.com ; Tregallast Barton; caravan per week £395-540) Kitsch connoisseurs will adore
this place, with a collection of caravans tricked-out in retro designs - from a timber shep-
herd's hut to a five-berth hippie bus, all with gas hob, cool-box and woodburner. Camping
is also available. Facilities are simple: lighting is provided by candles and paraffin lamps,
and the toilet block only has one shower.
Coverack YHA
( 0845-371 9014; www.yha.org.uk/hostel/coverack ; School Hill; dm from £18, r from £36) Brilliantly located
hostel inside a former gentleman's residence on the hillside above Coverack. Rooms are
mostly modern, and a few have windows overlooking the bay.
HOSTEL £
Lifeboat House
( 01326-281212; www.lifeboathouse.com ; mains £10-18; 10am-10pm) As its name hints, this Cover-
ack cafe is located in the village's old lifeboat station, so as you'd expect, seafood figures
heavily on the menu: megrim sole, monkfish tail, roast gurnard and so on. It's fairly
cramped inside and doesn't take bookings, so arrive early if you want a window table - al-
ternatively, you can just get fish-and-chips to take away.

WORTH A TRIP
ROSKILLY'S FARM
Just outside St Keverne is Roskilly's Farm ( 01326-280479; www.roskillys.co.uk ; meals £6-12;
10am-6pm), an ice cream maker and organic farm which has scooped several awards for its ice creams, yoghurts,
fudges, sorbets and fruit jams. It's a lovely spot to spend an afternoon: there are several walking trails to explore
around the farm, and light lunches are served at the Croust House cafe, housed in one of the old outbuildings. You
can even watch the cows being milked in the viewing gallery at 4.30pm. Needless to say, it's also the best spot on
the Lizard for an ice cream.
The farm is at Tregallast Barton, about a mile south of St Keverne. Look out for the signs as you head towards
the village on the B3293.
