In-Depth Information
( 01736-363074; www.tolcarneinn.co.uk ; mains £12-18; lunch noon-2.15pm, dinner 7-9pm, closed Sun eve &
Mon) Now run by chef supremo Ben Tunnicliffe (who previously oversaw the renowned
Abbey Restaurant in Penzance), this cosy Newlyn inn is fast gaining ground as one of the
area's premium gastropubs. The ethos is refreshingly honest - top-quality fish, seafood
and locally-sourced meat, served as simply as possible. It's deservedly becoming very
popular, so bookings are advised, especially for Sunday lunch.
Shopping
The largest (and oldest) fishing family is W Stevenson & Sons, who owns the Newlyn
market and runs two fish outlets on Harbour Rd in Newlyn and Wharf Rd in Penzance
(beneath the Wharfside Shopping Centre). You can buy direct from the fish shops, or
place an order by phone or online; it's always worth phoning ahead if you're after
something specific. Other Newlyn suppliers:
