Tremenheere Sculpture Garden
( 01736-448089; www.tremenheere.co.uk ; garden admission adult £6.50, children 11-15yr £3; 10am-5pm Mon-
Sat, 10am-4pm; ) This inventive landscaped garden opened just outside Penzance in 2012.
The gardens sit in a sheltered valley, landscaped with all kinds of exotic trees and shrubs
that benefit from Penwith's balmy sub-tropical climate. They're also awash with artworks
and installations: look out for a 'sky-view' chamber by James Turrell, a 'black mound' of
tree stumps by David Nash and a 'Camera Obscura' by Billy Wynter, offering a unique
panorama of the gardens and Mount's Bay. There's also a super cafe, the Lime Tree
(lunches £8 to £14), next to the car park, and there are family events during the school
holidays such as den-building workshops through to crafts sessions. See the website for
details.
It's a bit difficult to find the first time. Look out for the left turning to Gulval as you
head into Penzance, and follow the road through the village until you see signs for the gar-
dens.

Trengwainton
(NT; 01736-363148; trengwainton@nationaltrust.org.uk ; Madron; adult/child £6.30/3.15; 10am-5pm Sun-Thu
mid-Feb-Nov) Two miles north of Penzance near Madron is the walled garden of Trengwain-
ton, which is famous for its collection of ferns, shrubs, magnolias and rhododendrons,
many of which were brought back by Cornish plant-hunters in the 19th century. Peculi-
arly, the kitchen garden was laid out to match the dimensions of Noah's Ark, but the main
draw is the stunning vista over Mount's Bay. Admission is free for National Trust mem-
bers.
Nearby is the Madron Holy Well , whose cure-all waters have been sought out by ailing pil-
grims for at least six centuries. The ruins of the chapel date from the early Middle Ages,
but the well was also a sacred site for pre-Roman Celts.
