In-Depth Information
Trevaunance Cove
At the bottom of the steep coombe (valley) below St Agnes, this sandy beach is the town's
main seaside playground, with beach huts to change in, rockpools to delve in, and the
nearby Driftwood Spars pub to provide post-swim pints. Koru Kayaking
( www.korukayaking.co.uk ) runs trips from the cove.
At low tide, you can walk across the rocks to Trevellas Porth.
COVE
Trevellas Porth
This former mining valley is just across the rocks from Trevaunance Cove, and is locally
known as Blue Hills, a reference to the blue heather that grows on the surrounding hills.
The steep valley is littered with mine workings and chimneys, and there's a small sandy
beach which offers super snorkelling around the offshore rock stacks. North of the beach,
the coast path leads up to Perranporth Airfield, built during WWII but now used by local
flying clubs.
At the rear of the valley is one of the last remaining tin workshops in Cornwall, the Blue
Hills Tin Stream ( 01872-553341; www.bluehillstin.com ; adult/child £5.50/3; 10am-4pm Mon-Sat Jul-Aug,
10am-2pm Mon-Sat late-Mar-late-Oct) . Guided tours take in the whole process, from mining and
smelting through to casting and finishing.
If you're driving, the beach is about 2 miles east of St Agnes, on a turn-off from the
B3285 (signed to Wheal Kitty). The road down is very steep and parking is limited; it
might be easier to park at the small car park at the top of the hill and walk down.
COVE
The Beacon
If you're feeling energetic, you can climb up to the area's highest viewpoint, The Beacon,
which is about an hour's walk from St Agnes. From the top, the panorama stretches across
most of Cornwall on a clear day; look out for the dark tors of Bodmin Moor to the east
and the distinctive summit of Carn Brea in the west.
The beacon is just over a mile's walk from St Agnes town, and fairly well signposted
from the village square; you can download a PDF at www.stagnes.com that details several
circular routes.
VIEWPOINT
Mount Hawke Skate Park
( 01209-890705; www.mounthawke.com ; weekends 1-8pm) Cornwall's only undercover skate
park is just outside the village of Mount Hawke. Hours vary according to the school holi-
days, so phone ahead. It's tricky to find, so ask for directions.
