In-Depth Information
( 01841-532554; 6-8 Lanadwell St) In business since 1803, this quaint old boozer is a reliable
pint stop, with St Austell ales on tap. Old rudders, ships' wheels and even a croc's head
adorn the main bar.
PADSTOW'S SEVEN BAYS
The headland west of Padstow is studded with a string of beaches known locally as 'the Seven Bays'.
Nearest to town are Trevone (1.5 miles from Padstow) and half-moon Harlyn (2 miles), which both offer
good, safe swimming, with lifeguards in summer and surf/watersports schools. Nearby Mother Ivey's Bay (2.5
miles) is reached along the cliff path; it's usually quieter than its neighbours, despite the proximity of several loc-
al caravan parks.
Further west there are stunning, surf-battered views from Trevose Head , a notorious shipping hazard that was
once used as a quarry, and has been topped by a lighthouse since the mid-19th century.
Near the headland are the cheek-by-jowl beaches of Booby's Bay (3.5 miles) and Constantine (4 miles),
which lace together at low tides to form one great swash of rock and sand. Next comes Treyarnon (5 miles), with
a natural rockpool that doubles as a swimming pool, followed by the slender cove of Porthcothan (6 miles).
Although it's not officially one of the Seven Bays, Hawker's Cove , 2 miles west of Padstow, is also worth
seeking out. It's one of the best places to swim around Padstow when the tide's in. Between 1827 and 1967 it was
home to Padstow's lifeboat before it moved near Trevose Head.
