OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
LANTIC & LANSALLOS
There are several little-known beaches strung along the coastline towards Looe, but they can be tricky to find
without a decent map. Lansallos is a small patch of sand and shingle reached by a half-mile trail from Lansallos
village; a second, even more remote beach called Palace Cove can be reached along the coast path. There's more
space on the twin beaches of Great and Little Lantic , a pair of soft-sand coves reached via a steep cliff-path.
Neither has facilities, but they're pretty much guaranteed crowd-free. There's also a National Trust (NT) campsite
at Highertown Farm ( 01208-265211; www.campingninja.com/highertown ; £5 per adult, £2.50 per child;
Apr-Nov), in a field above Lansallos.
The easiest way to reach the beaches is to take the foot ferry from Fowey to Polruan, then walk along the coast
path; it's about 1.5 miles from Polruan to Lantic, 2.5 miles to Lansallos. Alternatively, you can drive from Lost-
withiel, but parking is very limited.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Golant
This tiny village sits at the bottom of a steep hill about 2 miles from Fowey, on the west
side of the Fowey River. It's a peaceful place, ideal for a riverside pint and ploughman's
lunch at the 19th-century Fisherman's Arms ( 01726-832453; mains £7-14; lunch noon-3pm, dinner
6-9pm) . Afterwards you can wander along the banks of the river and spot birds on the creek,
and see the remains of the village's little train station, disused since 1965.
Above the village is one of southeast Cornwall's best hostels, Golant YHA ( 0845-371
9019; golant@yha.org.uk ; dm £16.50, r £36) , which runs wildlife trips and badger-spotting expedi-
tions along the river.
The 524/525 bus stops at the Golant turning, or you can follow the Saint's Way trail from
Fowey.
