ing celebs and film stars, Olga Polizzi's ritzy St Mawes establishment is still the queen of
the castle in St Mawes. Chilled checks, sea stripes and deluxe fabrics in the bedrooms,
plus little extras including a private cinema, motor launch and award-winning bistro. It's a
wallet-buster, but one to remember.

Victory Inn
( 01326-270324; www.victory-inn.co.uk ; mains £10-18) Venerable village boozer tucked up an alley
of the harbour, whitewashed on the outside, and decorated with hanging baskets in sum-
mer. It still has a bit of vintage character downstairs, but the upstairs restaurant is all twis-
ted willow and muted tones. Good food, especially on Sunday for the roast.

Rising Sun

trade with visitors straight off the St Ives ferry. It has a little walled patio out front, and
serves solid food as well as a decent carvery on Wednesday and Sunday. Upstairs rooms
(rooms £98 to £142) are frilly and rather old-fashioned.

The Watch House

11am-10pm Mon-Sat, 11am-9pm Sun) This relaxed restaurant on the St Mawes waterfront is where
everyone wants to eat. The interior is suitably shipshape - clean lines, white tablecloths,
sea-blue banquettes, wooden chairs - providing the setting for simple, unpretentious
Mediterranean-style food, such as crab cakes with aioli and tomato compote, or Fal mus-
sels with smoked bacon, Cornish cider and wild garlic. It's not quite fine-dining, but it'll
definitely do.
