TOP OF CHAPTER
Penryn
These days you'll be hard-pushed to tell where Falmouth ends and Penryn begins. But in
bygone days this was a proud market town in its own right, as well as the site of one of
Cornwall's great seats of ecclesiastical learning, Glasney College (another casualty of
Henry VIII's monastery-bashing antics during the Dissolution). The high street still has
many attractive 18th and 19th century buildings (many of which are heritage listed), but
the old riverside dock which once provided the town's livelihood is now mostly lined by
shops and apartments. After decades in the doldrums, Penryn received a kick-start follow-
ing the arrival of University College Falmouth, and its twisty alleyways are now home to
a smattering of cafes, boutiques and food shops.
Of particular note is the Higher Market Studio ( 01326-374191; www.highermarketstudio.co.uk ; 19
Higher Market St) , which sells retro furniture and artworks.
