and the Half Moon Battery, designed to play a crucial role in the event of Nazi invasion
during WWII. Underground are the guns' magazines and observation post.
Outdoor concerts are held in the grounds during summer. Less tuneful is the Noonday
Gun , which rings out at noon sharp every day throughout July and August.
Town Beaches
Falmouth's bucket-and-spade beaches aren't quite up to north coast standards, but they're
nice enough for paddling and sun-lounging. Nearest to town is Gyllyngvase , a flat sandy
beach backed by the ever-popular Gylly Beach Café, about half a mile from the town
centre. Fifteen minutes' walk along the coast path is the smaller beach of Swanpool , near a
small inland lagoon populated by grebes, coots, ducks and mute swans, as well as the
Indaba Fish on the Beach cafe. A couple of miles further along the coast is Maenporth , the
quietest of the three, with facilities including a beach cafe, kayak centre and smart restaur-
ant, the Cove. The 1978 wreck of the Scottish trawler, the Ben Asdale , can usually be seen
just along the coast at low-tide.
All the beaches have car parks, but they fill up quickly in summer. Bus 500 stops at all
three beaches en route to Trebah Gardens and the Helford Passage.
