In-Depth Information
Around 1.25 miles west of St Cleer, these crashing waterfalls are one of the most
renowned beauty spots on the moor. You can take a dip in the waterfall's pools, but the
water is always icy-cold and the rocks are very slippy. Around the falls are the remains of
the ancient oak woodland which once covered much of the moor. There is a car park half
a mile's walk from the reserve near Draynes Bridge.
Prehistoric Sites
The highest concentration of prehistoric sites is found in the southern moor. Near the
small village of Minions, about 2 miles east of Siblyback Lake, the curious double stone
circles known as The Hurlers are said to be the remains of men turned to stone for daring to
play the Cornish sport of hurling on a Sunday. Nearby is the Cheesewring , a weird stack of
granite stones that's said to be the work of local giants, but is actually the result of natural
erosion. Three miles south near Darite is Trethevy Quoit - sometimes known as King Ar-
thur's Quoit or the Giant's House - another example of Cornwall's distinctive Neolithic
burial chambers, standing almost 15ft high.
In the middle of Twelve Men's Moor, the Trewortha Bronze Age Farm consists of a set of re-
constructed roundhouses, faithfully built using thatch, timber, and traditional tools. It's on
private land and is mainly used for educational purposes, but you can look over the site
from the top of Kilmar Tor.

Carnglaze Caverns
( 01579-320251; www.carnglaze.com ; adult/child £6/4; 10am-5pm) Bodmin Moor's slate was once
an important local export, and these deep caverns were cut out by hand by local miners,
leaving behind a moody network of subterranean caves and a glittering underground pool.
Concerts and plays are sometimes held inside the caves in summer. The caves are just out-
side St Neot and well signed.
Siblyback Water Park

opportunity for getting out on the water, including windsurfing, rowing, waterskiing and
wakeboarding. Mixed-use trails also run around the shoreline, and there's a small cafe.

surfing taster sessions start from £34 for two hours.
