with chief winemaker Bob Lindo. Pick up the A30 again for a drive past the silvery arcs of
Colliford Lake
and
Dozmary Pool
, both rich in fable and folklore.
As you pass through Bolventor, it's worth stopping in for a look around
Jamaica Inn
, made famous by the
novel of the same name - although you'll find the du Maurier connections are pretty thin on the ground these
days. A much better option for a pint and a ploughman's lunch is the Rising Sun, a cosy pub in nearby
Altar-
nun
.
From here, turn south along the B3257 and the B3254 to the village of
Minions
. Nearby you can hike to
two of the moor's prehistoric monuments: the
Hurlers
and the
Cheesewring
, one made by man, the oth-
er by nature. Three miles south, near Darite, is
Trethevy Quoit
, a classic dolmen topped by an enormous flat
capstone. More prehistoric ruins can be found nearby, but you'll need an OS map to find most of them.
Further west, a narrow back-road winds to the impressive cascade of
Golitha Falls
, which makes a lovely
place for a paddle and a picnic on a hot summer's day. Nearby, the parish church of
St Neot
is blessed with
some fabulous medieval stained glass that's worth a detour. Otherwise, continue on to the old slate mine at
Carnglaze Caverns
, where you can venture underground to explore the caves and underwater pool.
Finish up with a walk around the forested trails of
Cardinham Woods
and a proper Cornish cream tea at
the Woods Cafe, nestled in a shady glade in the heart of the forest.

Liskeard & the Southern Moor
The southern stretches of the moor are arguably its most beautiful, a wild swathe of tawny
heaths, wooded copses and blustery lakes. It feels a little less desolate than the central
moor, although it still has its wild spots - most notably the wild expanse of
Twelve Men's
Moor
and the high point of
Kilmar Tor
(396m), a rocky pile of granite blocks that offers
majestic views over the eastern moor. It's possible to walk to the summit, but you'll need
a proper map, good boots and compass skills - if the mist sets in while you're walking,
there's little else to guide your way.
The main town of
Liskeard
makes a useful access point, but like many of the moorland
towns, it's looking a little neglected; shopping guru Mary Portas recently featured it in a
high-profile television campaign to rescue Britain's high streets. The quiet village of
St
Neot
is a prettier place to be based.
