Berridon Farm
( 01409-241552; www.berridonfarm.co.uk ; near Bradworthy; tent for three nights £365-465; Easter- mid-Oct;
) At Berridon camping goes seriously comfy. Its five or six-person, insulated safari-
style tents each sport a leather sofa and wood burner/oven, plus proper beds and a flushing
loo. If it's wet out, head for the shabby-chic sitting-eating-playing space in a converted
barn. Otherwise, sit on the veranda in the evening sun, sipping a West Country beer from
the honesty shop, having ordered locally-baked chocolate croissants for breakfast. You
can even collect your own (free) eggs from the hen house in the field. It's all tucked away
11 miles south of Clovelly.

Red Lion
( 01237-431237; www.clovelly.co.uk ; The Quay; d £146-162) Not so much a room with a view, more
a view with a room. Set right on Clovelly Quay, the hardest choice here is whether to look
out over the sea or the harbour (both are captivating) from fresh bedrooms dotted with el-
egant, wicker Lloyd Loom-style furniture. Tuck into classy cooking in the restaurant (two/
three courses £25/30, open 7pm to 8.30pm, booking required) or robust pub grub in the
bar (mains £6 to £10, open noon to 2.30pm and 6pm to 8.30pm), watched over by the loc-
ally caught, stuffed shark's head on the wall.

TOP OF CHAPTER
Hartland Peninsula
A rugged, right-angle of land, the Hartland Peninsula has the kind of coast that makes you
gasp. It feels like the edge of Devon, and it is - the county goes no further west from here
and only a few miles south before the cliffs surge off into Cornwall. Tucked away from
traffic through-routes, its unspoilt coastline produces gorgeous sunsets and its remoteness
ensures stunning star displays at night.
Hartland Quay is around four miles by road south of Hartland Point. The village of
Hartland, with its shops and pubs, is a few miles inland.
