Clovelly
POP 450
At this traffic-free fishing village white cottages cascade beside sheer cliffs and a crab-
claw harbour curls out into a deep-blue sea. Cobbles are everywhere - smothering houses,
garden walls and the incredibly steep lanes, giving the village the air of flowing down the
hill. Inevitably it's a tourist honeypot and is sometimes branded artificial. But despite
Clovelly's sometimes stage-set feel, around 98% of its houses have year-round tenants,
which creates a tangible sense of community.
Clovelly is privately owned and you have to pay to get in via the vast visitor centre (
01237-431781; www.clovelly.co.uk ; Clovelly; adult/child £6.50/4;
9am-6.30pm Jun-Sep, 9.30am-5pm Apr-May &
Oct, 10am-4pm Nov-Mar) .
