STAR GAZING ON EXMOOR
All over Exmoor people are, rightly, clearly chuffed to bits that it's been named Europe's first International Dark
Sky Reserve, in recognition of the night-time inky blackness overhead. But what does that mean in practice?
Namely, a whole host of local organisations striving to limit light pollution; plus, for visitors, some simply spec-
tacular star displays. The ENPA runs unforgettable, free, night-time navigation and stargazing walks - eerie hill-
top hikes illuminated only by mesmerising constellations. The authority has also produced Dark Sky Discovery
leaflets, complete with star charts and maps pinpointing the best light-free spots. For optimum star gazing, cent-
ral, higher Exmoor is best - try Brandon Two Gates (on the B3223), or Webber's Post (just north of Dunkery
Beacon).

Dunster & Around
POP 1220
Dunster, one of Exmoor's oldest villages, gathers around a scarlet-walled castle and a me-
dieval yarn market, an attractive tumbling of bubbling brooks, packhorse bridges and
cobbled streets. Tucked away on the edge of the northern moor, its varied sleeping and
eating options make it an attractive base. Three unusual attractions nearby are also worth a
detour.
The family-friendly resort of Minehead is 3 miles north east of Dunster.

hill. Built by the Luttrell family, who once owned much of northern Exmoor, the oldest
sections are 13th century, although the turrets and exterior walls are 19th-century addi-
tions. Inside, look out for Tudor furnishings, 17th-century plasterwork and a ridiculously
grand staircase; outside, the terraced gardens have views across Exmoor's shores. Stay
alert for spooks; the castle is one of England's most haunted.
