Moretonhampstead
POP 1786
Moretonhampstead has made a living from through-traffic for centuries but these days a
mini-bypass leads many passing cars and tractors away from its central square. The vil-
lage centre is a pleasant jumble of Georgian houses, shops, pubs and restaurants, and its
bustle can be welcome after the remoteness of the higher moor.

DARTMOOR'S OUTDOOR POOLS
Considering its 368-sq-miles of landlocked hills, Dartmoor might not seem like an ideal spot for an al fresco dip.
But it is. Moretonhampstead, Chagford, Bovey Tracey, Buckfastleigh and Ashburton each have small and elegant
outdoor pools, which swarm with local families once the temperatures soar. They're often solar heated, admission
is normally a few pounds, and they tend to be open from June to August. Times vary; local tourist offices can ad-
vise.
