Higher Venton Farm
( 01364-621235; www.ventonfarm.com ; near Widecombe-in-the-Moor; s/d £40/70; ) Higher Venton
could be used to define the architectural style 'picture-postcard thatch'. A 16th-century
farmhouse with low lintels and a tightly winding staircase, there's not a straight line in the
place. Some rooms share bathrooms. It's on a road heading south out of Widecombe; fol-
low Rugglestone Inn signs, and it's half a mile beyond.

Manor Cottage
( 01364-621218; www.manorcottagedartmoor.co.uk ; Widecombe-in-the-Moor; d £50-60; ) Roses climb
round the doorway of an ancient Dartmoor cottage that's just a sheep's bleat from Wide-
combe's picturesque village green. The best billet is a bedroom-bathroom suite at the top
of its own spiral staircase (two other doubles share a bathroom). Breakfasts feature berry
compote, local sausages, and eggs freshly laid by the hens clucking around outside.

Rugglestone Inn
( www.rugglestoneinn.co.uk ; Widecombe-in-the-Moor; mains £10; meals noon-4pm & 6.30-8pm) For a taste of
traditional Dartmoor, head to the Rugglestone Inn. Two of the three tiny rooms are
warmed by real fires; unvarnished wooden tables and ancient chairs are scattered around.
The flavoursome food is homemade; expect hearty ploughman's, and beef and ale or steak
and Stilton pies. Many of the ingredients are provided by local farmers, you'll often find
them eating here too.
