The same chef runs both this smart bistro and
the sumptuous Horn of Plenty country-house hotel. This in-town outpost also makes ima-
ginative use of local foodstuffs; the roasted wood pigeon comes with mushroom risotto;
the pork tenderloin with a rich port sauce. Take a tip from the locals and book in for a
Tuesday pot-luck supper (2/3 courses £25/30); knocking £10 to £12 off the price of each
meal.

& 7-9pm)
With its flagstone floors and squishy sofas, the bistro (mains £6 to £17) at Browns
is a top spot to peruse the paper before sampling some gutsy moorland ingredients; per-
haps Dartmoor rabbit terrine, or pheasant hot pot with spiced red cabbage. The restaurant
(mains £20, six courses £70) cranks the culinary skill up to another level: try the confit
chicken with truffled egg yolk, or a real rarity: fallow deer tartare.

Local foodies love the classic, locally sourced, seasonal cuisine at this
fine hotel. Flavours are rich: poached duck eggs come with truffled asparagus; beef fillet
with ox cheek and marrow crust. Faultless service and the plush, hushed surroundings re-
inforce a country-house atmosphere that starts when you're greeted by name on the door-
step, having swept up the drive. Their Pot Luck Monday dinners (three courses £29) are a
steal. It's 3 miles from Tavistock.
