East Portlemouth Ferry

The half-hourly East Portlemouth Ferry
(passenger only) chugs to the sandy shores opposite Salcombe. Between Easter and Octo-
ber it goes from Ferry Pier (off Fore St), and from November to Easter from Whitestrand
Quay.

This yellow-and-blue passenger boat shuttles from Whitestrand Quay to South Sands,
where an ingenious motor-powered landing platform trundles into the water to help you
ashore. The ferry runs every half-hour, the trip takes 20 minutes.
Walks
For an exhilarating and incredibly steep coastal hike, head south from South Sands along
the coast path to Bolt Head (2 miles). En route you'll pass towering rock formations and
sheer-sided cliffs. Then you can either head back the same way, or strike out on footpaths
inland to complete a circular walk. The tourist office can advise.
