Beaches
A string of beautiful beaches frame Salcombe's shores, many linked to the town by fer-
ries. The best are the sands on the opposite, East Portlemouth, side, where a long strip of
sand emerges as the tide falls. At high tide, head south on the lane backing the shore to
sand-filled Mill Bay.
On the Salcombe side a waterside walk south along Cliff Rd leads to compact North
Sands (even smaller at high water), then broader, but still-tidal South Sands, with its mini-
watersports centre, cool cafe and chic hotel.

) An Aladdin's cave of curios, Edwardian country house Overbeck's crowns the cliffs at
Salcombe's estuary mouth. It's set in 3 hectares of lush, subtropical gardens, with exotic
plants framing wide views. It's named after former owner Otto Overbeck, an inventor who
