WORTH A TRIP
MILLBROOK INN
Mix together one French chef, an ancient British inn and piles of choice Devon produce and what do you get?
Gutsy, classically influenced food served up in the quaint old Millbrook Inn ( 01548-531581;
www.millbrookinnsouthpool.co.uk ; South Pool, near Kingsbridge; mains £12-18, snacks from £5;
noon-1.45pm & 7-8.45pm; ). There's a nose-to-tail ethos here; flavour-packed dishes include home-cured ox
tongue and salted belly pork, plus potted south Devon crab and gooey, grilled goat's cheese dotted with walnut
and pear. Rich puddings round things off nicely (don't miss the dark chocolate fondant), and to wash it all down,
you'll be treated to largely French wines and very local ale. Look out for that other excellent French invention:
the (bargain) menu du jour (two/three courses £10/12).

Despite being on the same estuary as chi chi Salcombe to the south, Kingsbridge has pre-
served the feel of a sleepy, waterside market town. It offers a genuine glimpse of rural
Devon life and browsing its independent shops or lingering by its quay is a pleasant way
to spend a few hours.
