OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
DITTISHAM
Dittisham is one of those enchanting, water-side villages that makes you wonder if, really, living anywhere else is
such a good idea after all. A cluster of rough-stone cottages gathers along a riverbank dotted with yachts, a pon-
toon lined with dinghies stretches out from a cracking pub and the Anchorstone Cafe (

. Agatha
Christie's holiday home, Greenway, sits on the opposite bank, connected by the Dittisham to Greenway Ferry

. If it's not in sight when you arrive, summon it by ringing the ship's bell beside the pontoon. You can
drive to Dittisham (pronounce it '
Dit-shm
' and feel like a local); it's 5 miles north of Dartmouth, but a much
more memorable arrival is on the

Beautiful from the banks, Dartmouth is even more beguiling from the water. The Green-
way Ferry company's boat trips include ones to Agatha Christie's summer house, Green-
way, and the village of Dittisham. A series of car and passenger ferries also regularly
shuttle between Dartmouth and Kingswear, on the opposite bank, and to Dartmouth
Castle.
