Dartmouth & Around
POP 7500
A bewitching blend of primary-coloured boats and delicately shaded houses, Dartmouth is
irresistible. Buildings cascade down steep, wooded slopes towards the River Dart, and
17th-century shops with splendidly carved and gilded fronts line narrow lanes. Its charms
have drawn a yachting crowd and a string of top-notch eateries, but fleets of fishing ves-
sels, ferries and pleasure boats ensure it's still a busy working port with an authentic tang
of the sea. Hiking trails lead up the river or onto the cliffs, while a unique art deco house
and Agatha Christie's Greenway estate wait in the wings. The pastel-painted village of
Kingswear sits on the opposite bank.
