PARKING
A seven-day permit costs £33, allowing parking in all council car parks (but not on-street
parking) in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. It's available from the tourist office (and the
website).
TRAIN
A branch line runs from Exeter (on the London Paddington-Penzance main line) via Tor-
quay (£8, 50 minutes, hourly) to Paignton (£7, 52 minutes). Many services stop at Teign-
mouth, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren.
Another branch line runs at least hourly from Newton Abbot (also on the Lon-
don-Penzance mainline) to Torquay (20 minutes) and on to Paignton (10 minutes).
The Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Co also puffs to Kingswear, on the op-
posite side of the river to Dartmouth; ferries link the two locations.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Brixham
An appealing, pastel-painted tumbling of fishermen's cottages leads down to Brixham's
horseshoe harbour, signalling a very different place from the resort towns to the north.
Here gently tacky arcades co-exist with winding streets, brightly coloured boats and one
of Britain's busiest fishing ports. Although picturesque, Brixham is far from a neatly
packaged destination and its brand of gritty charm offers a more authentic glimpse of life
along Devon's coast. The port also recently made it onto TV screens worldwide as the
location for Sky Atlantic's fly-on-the wall documentary, Fish Town .
