In-Depth Information
it's like clambering through a doll's house. Hunt out the intricate paper cuts (the cousins'
own work), a delicate feather frieze in the drawing room and the gallery plastered with a
thousand seashells on the top floor. The house is dressed as if the inhabitants just might
come back at any moment, so you can play on the grand piano, stroll into a dining room
where the table is laid out for a meal, and see a nightshirt hanging off a wardrobe, ready
for bed. The house is 2 miles north of Exmouth on the A376; bus 57 (two to four per
hour) runs close by.
Edge Kitesurfing
( 01395-222551; www.edgewatersports.com ; 3 Royal Ave) At Exmouth, the wind whips across the
mouth of the River Exe's wide estuary, creating prime kite and windsurfing conditions. A
series of sandbanks also ensures plenty of shallow, flat-water areas that are ideal places to
learn. Lessons run by Edge include kite surfing, for both beginners (per 3 hours £95) and
intermediates (per hour £50); and wakeboarding for beginners (per hour £40). Experien-
ced wakeboarders can hire a boat and driver for £65 per hour.
WATER SPORTS
Stuart Line
( 01395-222144; www.stuartlinecruises.co.uk ; adult/child 2-3hr cruise £8/6; 1-3 per week Apr-Oct) Stuart
Line runs a string of trips from Exmouth Marina. The voyage up the River Exe is a pleas-
ant cruise, especially when the weather's too rough to head out to sea. But the pick of the
trips are the sailings along Devon's Jurassic Coast past the rust-red cliffs, and the impress-
ive sea stacks that emerge at Ladram Bay. The chance of dolphin sightings adds to the ap-
peal.
CRUISE
ExePlorer Water Taxi
( 07970 918418; www.exeplorer.co.uk ; Exmouth Marina; adult/child return £4/2.50; 8am-5pm daily Apr-Sep)
To really get a feel for the sheer width of the River Exe at its mouth, take this tub-like,
red-and-blue water taxi for the 15-minute cross-estuary trip to the Dawlish Warren Nature
Reserve ( Click here ) , a wind-whipped slither of sand that juts out into the river. The taxi
will also shuttle you to the excellent, floating River Exe Cafe. The taxi is normally at Ex-
mouth Marina on the hour and half past.
