ley are gorgeous, the wines are from the vines in front of you and the food is full of fla-
vour. Try lemon sole with soused veg, pasta with hot smoked salmon, and roasted vine to-
mato and basil tart. Pick this perfect lunch spot on a warm day to join diners sipping vin-
tages on the sun-filled terrace.

( 01392-851282; www.thebeerengine.co.uk ; Newton St Cyres; mains £11; bar 11am-11pm; meals noon-2.15pm
daily, 6.30-9.15pm Tue-Sat, to 8.15pm Sun & Mon) A dream-come-true for ale aficionados: a pub that
brews its own beer. The decor is varnished floorboards, leather settles and exposed red
brick, but the best bit is downstairs: the gleaming stainless-steel tubs and tubes of the fer-
menting process. The building's past as a railway hotel inspires the brews' names: the
fruity Rail Ale, sharp and sweet Piston Bitter and the well-rounded Sleeper Heavy. Fla-
voursome food includes slow-cooked shoulder of West Country lamb, a range of plough-
man's lunches made with local Quickes cheddar, and steak and Sleeper Ale pie.
Newton St Cyres is on the A377, 5 miles north of Exeter. Or go car free: train services
from Exeter often chug into the village in time for supper; the one that tends to return just
after 11pm (10.30pm on Sunday) is very handy indeed.
