( 01392-214440; www.rustybike-exeter.co.uk ; 67 Howell Rd; mains £14; 6-10pm daily, plus noon-3pm Sat &
Sun) The retro fussball table and bashed-about chairs create the air of a beatnik hang-out
but the cooking is pure stylish-rustic cuisine. Menus change daily depending on what an
array of quality local suppliers bring in. Expect rarities like pressed venison and mallard;
beef chuck and carrots; and beetroot, horseradish and pheasant - delivered, of course, by
the local gamekeeper.

( www.michaelcaines.com ; Cathedral Yard; mains £10-20, 2-/3-course lunch £11/16; 9am-10pm) The MC in
the title stands for acclaimed chef Michael Caines, so prepare for bistro classics with cre-
ative twists: mushroom and Devon Blue cheese risotto, and fish encased in batter made
with local Otter Ale. Leave room for the classically creamy crème brûlée.

( 01392-202234; www.harrys-exeter.co.uk ; 86 Longbrook St; mains £10; noon-2pm & 6-11pm daily) Harry's
is the kind of welcoming neighbourhood eatery you wish was on your own doorstep but
rarely is. The decor is all wooden chairs, blackboard menus and gilt mirrors; the food in-
cludes Spanish ham with marinated figs, crispy pizzas and a hearty three-bean chilli.

This restaurant's eponymous chef has two Michelin stars at his other Devon eatery,
Gidleigh Park ( Click here ) , and that style filters through here: expect a complex fusion of
West Country ingredients and full-bodied French flavours. Try the celeriac and truffle oil
soup, or the salad of Devon quail with smoked bacon, quail egg and caramelised hazel-
nuts. The seven-course meals (£65; £96 with wines) really are ones to linger over; the
early evening menus (two/three courses £17/23) are some of the best deals in town.
