three doubles, roomy dorms and wet room showers that are positively luxurious.

Silversprings

; 12 Richmond Rd; 1/2 bedroom apt per night £85/95; )
There
are so many reasons to make these serviced apartments your Exeter pied-á-terre. Tucked
away off a square a short walk from the city centre, each one comes with bedroom(s),
lounge and mini-kitchen, plus home comforts like DVD players and satellite TV. Furnish-
ing are fabulous: Isca is modern and sleek; Richmond sports rococo frills; while St Just is
all Edwardian elegance, with wood-panelled walls and a bell for the butler (manservant
not included).

The swirling
spiral staircase at St Olaves is so gorgeous it's tempting to sleep beside it. But you better
opt for the 18th-century-with-contemporary-twists bedrooms: expect ornate mirrors, brass
bedsteads and plush furnishings.
Magdalen Chapter
( 01392-281000;
www.themagdalenchapter.com
; Magdalen St; d £150-250; )
Undoubtedly
Exeter's coolest hotel (staff wear converse trainers and low-slung slacks), the Magdalen is
replete with funky flourishes. Lush purple corridors lead into dove-grey bedrooms, each
with iPad, coffee machine and mood-lighting ranging from bright Welcome, to dimmed-
down Relax. But the best bit is a tiny heated pool that flows from the outside into an in-
door enclave made toasty by its very own log burner.
