3.7 Summary
This chapter has reviewed the underlying communication technologies necessary to
support mobile and pervasive computing in construction. The key mobile and
pervasive computing devices were briefly outlined and the supporting commu-
nications networks and standards were described. The communication protocols
relevant to this context were also discussed and mention was made of proprietary
buses and protocols. Clearly, the deployment of mobile and pervasive computing
technologies in the construction industry needs to take advantage of the enabling
communications infrastructure presented in this chapter. Many of these are
included in the systems described in the other chapters of this topic.
