54 Day 3 : A Day in Recoleta
Sleep in and hav e a late br eakfast at y our
hotel. Have your hotel make dinner reser-
vations at La Bourgogne (p. 104),
a fine F rench r estaurant in the Alvear
Palace Hotel (p. 83). Then head
to Recoleta Cemetery (p. 124), in
the R ecoleta neighborhood. P ay homage
to the most famous tomb of all, E vita's.
Make sure to wander around and see many
of the other tombs, all glorious wor ks of
art. Around the corner from the cemetery,
head to the Centro Cultural Recoleta
white-marble buildings lining this par t of
Avenida Santa Fe. Head to the Zoological
Gardens (p. 123) and check out all the
animals, after buying special food for them
at the entrance. After ward, str oll do wn
Avenida Liber tador and wander among
the parks, heading to Museo Nacional de
Bellas Ar tes (p . 130). I t's a long
walk, but beautiful all along the way. Head
back to the hotel, freshen up, and head for
dinner at Casa C ruz (p . 110), in
Palermo Viejo, one of the city's best places
to be seen on a night out.
Day 5 : San Telmo & Tango
Head to Plaza D orrego (p . 122) for the
Sunday San Telmo antiques fair
(p. 125) and check out the ne west ar t
exhibit. If you've brought the kids along or
you're feeling young at heart, don't forget to
visit the childr en's section inside, with its
interactive science exhibits. Afterward, head
across Plaza Francia and take a coffee at La
Biela
(p. 122), one of the most enjo yable high-
lights of B uenos Air es. I n this open-air
bazaar, you can buy small antiques and sou-
venirs to bring home, and watch liv e tango
performances. (Keep an eye on your pockets
while you watch.) Then, grab a late lunch at
the atmospheric
(p . 106), one of the most
famous cafes in the city . After this much-
needed break, it's time to do some shopping
along Avenida Alv ear, stopping in such
stores as Polo Ralph Lauren (p. 141), built
into a grand mansion. I f you've been shop-
ping for hours, y ou're just in time for y our
reservation at La Bourgogne.
Day 4 : Palermo
After br eakfast, head to Plaza Italia and
take a brief walk ar
Bar E l F ederal
(p. 107). Head up Calle Defensa to take a
look at mor e antiques in the numer ous
shops lining the str eet, such as Galería El
Solar de French (p. 137). Head back to the
hotel and fr eshen up. You're having dinner
tonight at El Viejo Almacén (p . 147).
Watching their sho w is a gr eat way to end
your 5-day stay in Buenos Aires.

One of the world 's great alpine playgr ounds, the Argentina Lake D istrict has plenty to
discover. Visitors can combine adv enture activities with scenic driv es and other mor e
chilled-out explorations. I n the ev enings, enjoy great food and wine, and stay in lo vely
local inns. You'll need a rental car to get from San Carlos de Bariloche to San Martín de
los Andes and back. Pick one up at the Bariloche airport, but be ready for dirt roads and
some of the most aggressive drivers in Bariloche.
The trip starts with some orientation in Bariloche, the area's main city. After exploring
there for a few days, you'll continue on to two nearby towns: Villa la Angostura and San
Martín de los Andes. The entire driving route is spectacular, with tall for ests, expansive
mountain lakes, and photo opportunities at every turn.
