Glacier Martial/Aerosilla Finds Glacier Martial is a pleasant excursion that sits in
Ushuaia's backyard. Avenida Luis Fernando Martial winds 7km (4 1 / 4 miles) up from town
to the base of a beautiful mountain amphitheater . From here, a chairlift takes y ou on a
thrilling ride to the small G lacier Martial ($12/£8.20). It's a long walk up the r oad, and
there are no buses to take you there. Visitors usually hire a taxi for $12 (£8.20) and walk
all the way back down, or arrange for the driver to pick them up later. At the base of the
chairlift, don't miss a stop at La Cabaña ( & 2901/424257 ), an ex cellent teahouse
with a wraparound outdoor deck and mouthwatering cakes and pastries.

Museo del Fin de Mundo The main r oom of this museum displays an assor t-
ment of Indian hunting tools and colonial maritime instr uments. There's also a natural
history display of stuffed bir ds and a “ grandfather's r oom” set up to r esemble an old
general store, packed with antique pr oducts. But the str ength of this museum is its 60
history and nature videos available for viewing, and its reference library with more than
3,650 volumes, including a fascinating bir th record. Its store has an ex cellent range of
books about Patagonia for sale.

Museo Marítimo y P residio de Ushuaia Moments Ushuaia was populated
primarily by the penal colony set up her e in the late 1800s for hundr eds of Argentina's
most dangerous criminals. The rehabilitation system consisted of for ced labor to build
piers and buildings, and creative workshops for teaching carpentry, music, tailoring, and
other trades—all of which, coincidentally, fueled the local economy. The museum offers
a fascinating look into prisoners ' and prison wor kers' lives through interpretive displays
and artifacts. Here you can dw ell in the cells of mass mur derers and teenage anar chists
and read about their unenviable existence in what must have been a grim place. The on-
site restaurant serves “prison” meals and other theme items. The maritime museum dis-
plays famous ships and shipwrecks from the area. It's an outstanding museum.

Outdoor Activities
BOATING The best way to explore the Beagle Channel is by boat. Numerous compa-
nies offer a variety of trips, usually in modern catamarans with excellent guides. Many of
them run kiosks near the pier; you'll see a cluster of them by the water. The most popu-
lar excursion is a half-day cr uise of the Beagle Channel to vie w sea lions, penguins, and
more. Catamaranes Canoero ( & 2901/433893; www.catamaranescanoero.com.ar) has
a variety of options ranging fr om 2 1 / 2 hours to 8 hours, on four differ ent boats. Moto-
nave B arracuda ( & 2901/437066 ) leav es twice daily for its 3-hour trip ar ound the
channel for $45 (£30) per person, stopping at I sla de Lobos, Isla de Pájaros, and a light-
house. Motovelero Tres Marías ( & 2901/421897 ) also leav es twice daily and sails to
