Kaupé Restaurant ARGENTINE FINE DINING This has long been consid-
ered one of the best restaurants in Ushuaia, having built an award-winning reputation on
its superb cuisine and lovely view. Lately, portions have become smaller and prices bigger.
The menu is brief, but the offerings are delicious. Don't start your meal without ordering
a sumptuous appetizer of king crab wrapped in a crepe and bathed in saffron sauce. Main
courses include seafood, beef , and chicken; sample items include tenderloin beef in a
plum sauce or a subtly flav ored sea bass steamed in par chment paper. The extensiv e
gourmet wine list ranges in price from $14 to $58 (£9.45-£39); there's also wine by the
glass. Finish it all off with a sorbet in a fr othy champagne sauce. Kaupé 's dining area is
cozy, and candlelit tables exude r omance.

ated on a hill, 4 blocks fr om main str eet S an M artín. I n a modern house with large
windows, it overlooks the bay, with the town's clapboard church in the foreground. The
dining area is large and spacious, and the decor is modern if a little bar e. The clientele
are a healthy mix of locals and visitors. There's a kids ' menu, so families come for the
early sitting (before 9pm). All come for a seafood menu, which includes the ubiquitous
king crab, homemade pasta, and enormous desser ts of cr eam and fr esh fruit. There's a
new wine list and sommelier . Maria Lola may not leav e you speechless gastronomically,
but it makes for very pleasant evening dining. Its charm lies in its understatement.

Parrilla la Rueda PARRILLA There is a long line of parrillas along the far east
end of the main drag, San Martín. All offer “all you can eat” buffet-style service. The best
of the bunch by far is La Rueda. Lamb, beef, and chicken are all slow-roasted on the grill,
then offer ed table b y table. There's also a large salad bar and friendly , unpr etentious
service from people who honestly care that you enjoy your meal. Eat as much as you can
for $18 (£9.90), with a desser t like homemade flan included.

Ramos General COFFEEHOUSE/DELI This r ecently r enovated, 103-y ear-
old general stor e has a r elaxing appeal and huge personality . It's been lo vingly and pas-
sionately r estored; ther e ar e pieces of U shuaia's amazing heritage all ar ound. F amily
portraits of the original owners hang in a side room, and a piano sits in the corner, along
with old-fashioned typewriters. Situated in front of the port, the restaurant's menu offers
cheese platters and gener ous king crab salads. They have outstanding br eads and sw eet
treats by the fantastic French baker. Recommended are the panini, fisherman's salad, and
the superb cheese boards. It makes for the perfect midmorning coffee stop or last stop on
land before boarding a cruise. The wine list is excellent and includes a deser vedly pricey
Cheval des Andes. I n keeping with its old-world vibe, the coffeehouse also ser
ves as a
bakery, a chic ladies fashion stor e, and bar with draft beer.
