In Argentina, this is rar ely an issue
unless y ou hav e a lot of electr onics. To
avoid having to pay duty on foreign-made
personal items y ou owned before you left
on y our trip , bring along a bill of sale,
insurance policy , je weler's appraisal, or
receipts of pur chase. O r y ou can r egister
items that can be r eadily identified b y a
permanently affix ed serial number or
marking—think laptop computers, cam-
eras, and CD play ers—with C ustoms
before y ou leav e. Take the items to the
nearest C ustoms office or r egister them
with C ustoms at the airpor t fr om which
you're departing. You'll receive, at no cost,
a Certificate of Registration, which allows
duty-free entry for the life of the item.

Argentina
Travelers entering Argentina can bring per-
sonal effects—including clothes, je welry,
and pr ofessional equipment such as cam-
eras and computers—without paying duty .
In addition, they can bring in 21 liters of
alcohol, 400 cigar ettes, and 50 cigars

duty-free.
What You Can Take Home
from Argentina
Returning U.S. citiz ens who hav e been
away for at least 48 hours ar e allowed to
bring back, once ev ery 30 days, $800
worth of mer chandise duty-free. You'll be
charged a flat rate of duty on the next
$1,000 wor th of pur chases. Any dollar
amount bey ond that is dutiable at what-
ever rates apply. On mailed gifts, the duty-
free limit is $200. H ave y our r eceipts
handy to expedite the declaration pr ocess.
Note: If you owe duty, you are required to
pay on y our arriv al in the U nited States,
either by cash, personal check, go vernment
liquor, and 50 cigars. I n addition, y ou're
allowed to mail gifts to Canada v alued at
less than C$60 a day, provided they're unso-
licited and don't contain alcohol or tobacco
(write on the package “U nsolicited gift,
under $60 value”). Declare all valuables on
