This is a very comfortable and functional new hotel on the outskirts
of town. The view out your window just may include an iceberg or two here. Rooms are
similar to what y ou'd find in a classy business hotel, with crisp linens, satellite TV, a

Long before El Calafate was a major tourist destina-
tion, it was the heart of a rugged area populated by remote
estancias
(ranches). Kau Yatún
is a countr y inn located on the Estancia 25 de M ayo, only 5 blocks fr om El Calafate's
main drag. U se one of their bikes to ride into to wn. It has a lo vely rural charm, with
generous green spaces, quiet corners, and a r elaxed air. Rooms are very large, with thick
walls and ceilings. Bathrooms, likewise, are very large but are dated. The hallway can be
noisy. The r estaurant and bar ar e both pricey , but br eakfasts ar e gener ous. O ut back,
besides 7 hectar es (17 acr es) of paradisiacal natur e, is an ex cellent Argentine
parrilla.
When you are stuck tr ying to kill time in E l Calafate, y ou'll be glad y ou choose Kau
Yatún.

Hostería Lupama
Compact in siz e but big in hear t, this charming inn abo ve the
main part of town takes its name from a local aboriginal chief. You'll be drawn in by the
towering windows and lovely wood architecture. The feeling inside is simple but r ustic,
with touches of wood and stone. S pacious rooms upstairs hav e nice vie ws, particularly
those on the town side, and king-size beds. Separated bathrooms all have jetted tubs. The
two junior suites ar e slightly larger with two-person tubs. You can borr ow DVDs from
the video librar y to watch in y our own room. The bilingual staff is har dworking and
helpful.

With an ex cellent location just a block and a half fr om the
main drag, the Kau Kaleshen
hostería
is a simple and charming inn. It's been around long
enough to feel warm and authentic. R ooms ar e all located ar ound the tranquil back
garden, some on a two-stor y y ellow-walled building (the top floor r ooms hav e better
circulation). They all have rustic brick walls and ceramic floors; it's nothing fancy. Clean
white bathrooms are also simple, with stand-up sho wers only. There is a lovely teahouse
out front where breakfast is served.
