ground-level bar area has a pool table and a lovely fireplace in the cozy lounge. The staff
is knowledgeable about the ar ea and can help arrange ex cursions. My main concern is
that they have drastically raised their prices without any interior renovations or upgrades
to accompany the increase. It is no longer a bargain.

WHERE TO DINE
Fish is big in Puerto Madryn. The fishermen go out into the bay every morning and reel
in white salmon, cod, and sole. Meat is double the price here, compared to Buenos Aires,
because everything has to be flown or trucked in. If you are craving meat, the best place
is where the locals go—the simple Estela Parrilla, R. S. Pena 27 ( & 2965/451573 ). For
$12 to $14 (£8.20-£79.45), y ou can hav e tenderloin or filet mignon and a salad. A
variety of sausages is also available, as well as chicken on the grill. They're open Monday
to Saturday from 8pm to midnight and Sunday from noon to 11pm.

Cantina El Náutic o SEAFOOD A local tradition, this is a gr eat spot for seafood,
pasta, and fresh fish. The owners (father and son) ar e almost always ther e to make sur e
the service is smooth, that diners are happy, and that everyone's impressed with the doz-
ens of photos of celebrities who've dined here in the past. Dining a la carte can be pricey;
stick with the daily specials when possible. The executive menu is a deal, especially if
paella is on offer.

Mar y Meseta SEAFOOD/INTERNATIONAL This excellent seafood restau-
rant manages to be both upscale and relaxed, with a kids' menu. Service is top-notch, and
the chef uses P atagonian ingredients whenever possible to cr eate his masterpieces. S tart
with a bottle of cold Argentine sparkling wine and the chef's appetizer platter, consisting
of steamed mussels, smoked macker el, fried cod fingers, and pickled carr ots and cauli-
flower. Move on to what may very well be the most creative dish in Puerto Madryn: fresh
local cod baked with Patagonian honey, served on a bed of toasted cinnamon sticks and
sweet-potato chips. Other seafood dishes include a mixed grill of seafood and fish for two
people for $21 (£14), and a daily selection of fr esh grilled fish filets (depending on the
catch of the day). The seafood stew is a hearty meal on a cold ev ening.
