Butterfly Finds MODERN FUSION The three young amigos who own and
run this amazing and tiny lakeside restaurant could have set up shop just about anywhere
in the world—the Michelin-trained chef is Irish, the delightful sommelier's German, and
the charming server is a Porteña. That they chose a lovely location just above Bariloche's
popular Playa Bonita illustrates their passion for this place. Local ingedients, from rabbit
and duck to leeks and berries, are sourced daily and presented in an impeccably intricate
seven-course menu. Wine is offer ed by the bottle or as a highly r ecommended paired
tasting. On summer days, lunch and dinner are served on the outdoor patio. Reservations
are required.

Cassis EUROPEAN/REGIONAL Mariana Muller's inspired restaurant is nestled
on a cliff o verlooking Lago G utierrez, just to the south of B ariloche. Inside, with high
wooden rafters and gentle candlelight, you may feel like you've come to visit the cottage
of your casually stylish friends. The food has its roots in Europe. There are usually three
to five fixed four-course menus to choose fr om. They may include warm shrimps with
gin and lemon as an appetiz er, followed by sweetbreads in a pecan panz otti, and then a
slow-cooked salmon or a lamb strudel in sauvignon blanc reduction. That means limited
flexibility, and you will likely have a large meal. But the pace is gentle, making for a lei-
surely experience. The wine cellar has mor e than 200 labels. P rices ar e v ery high for
Bariloche standards. Cassis is also a nice spot for a late afternoon cocktail and light meal
on the deck.

Il Gabbiano Finds ITALIAN If Bariloche's dining scene has a sur e thing, this
outstanding Italian restaurant is it. Located close to the Llao Llao, Il Gabbiano is a labor
of love for its owners. It's set inside a bungalow that has a Mediterranean feel, with brick,
iron, and stone work r eminiscent of a countr yside farmhouse. The menu is authentic
Italiano. Antipasti include br uschetta and salmon with grapefr uit. Delicate homemade
pastas are varied and fr esh. Main entrees include osso buco, rabbit with garlic and r ose-
mary, and a simple trout with lemon. The wine cellar has more than 250 labels, including
a good selection of E uropean varieties, rare in Patagonia. Note: They do not accept any
credit cards.
