Estancia de Jesús María Close to the laid-back t own of Jesús M aría, 19km
(31 miles) north of Córdoba City, this is one of the best conserved and most visited
Jesuit estancias. The 17th-century church and residence form a U-shape ar ound a
well-tended garden. A pond, woods, and small g raveyard give the place an idyllic
feel. Its history is fascinating; wine made her e was the first American wine ser ved
to the Spanish royal family. In the Museo Jesuítico, you'll find colonial objects and
paintings, as w ell as old winemak ing equipment. The estancia is a 300m (984-f t.)
walk from the town. Follow Avenida Juan B. Justo north, turn left onto Cleto Peña,
and follow a dirt track until you reach the entrance.

Estancia de Santa Catalina This was the biggest and most impor tant of all
the estancias. Now in private hands, it is largely closed to the public but still worth
visiting f or its beautiful location and the mag nificent chur ch on the pr emises,
which is still ac cessible. The amazing baroque-style interior, funded by cattle rais-
ing, is one of the most valued w orks of c olonial architecture in the c ountry. It is
approximately 19km (12 miles) west of Jesús María, on an unpaved road.

Estancia la C andelaria To r each this lonely UNESC O World Heritage Sit e
120km (73 miles) nor thwest of C órdoba, y ou must driv e acr oss a high-altitude
plateau of mountain g rass and follow a route through charming rivers and water-
falls. Because of its isolation, it 's not as elaborate as its sister establishments. Serv-
ing as both a sanctuary for Christians and a fort against hostile indigenous tribes, it
has a more austere feel, yet it's nonetheless charming and majestic. One of its main
functions was to provide mules for the long trip to the silver mines of Bolivia.

Museo Histórico Provincial Marqués de Sobre Monte The largest colo-
nial house to sur vive intact in Argentina, this historical museum was used as the 18th-
century home and office of the first S panish governor of Córdoba. Completed in 1772,
the house sho wcases the to wn's early colonial histor y. The governor's commer cial and
office rooms were downstairs, with the more intimate family rooms upstairs. An amazing
collection of period furniture fills the bedrooms; public spaces display religious paintings,
