Museo Histórico José Evaristo Uriburu José Evaristo Uriburu's family, which
produced two Argentine presidents, bought this simple adobe house with a roof of reeds
and curved tiles in 1810. The street entrance leads directly to a courtyard, characteristic
of homes of this era. E xhibits include period furnitur e and costumes, as w ell as docu-
ments and objects belonging to the U riburus and General Arenales.

Museo Pajarito Velarde Guillermo Velarde Mors was one of S alta's most famous
bohemians. H is little to wn house was a must-see for any passing writers or ar tists in
1950s Salta. The quaint little corner cottage is no w an inter esting museum crammed
with musical instruments, Bolivian Carnaval masks, vinyl records, and Independence-era
weaponry. The enthusiastic guide, Car ol Murgvizur, graciously r eveals the literar y and
cultural legacy of the city as w ell as lets you try on a hat once worn b y Carlos Gardel.

Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes de Salta (Museum of Fine Arts) Color-
fully decorated tapestries and other r egional works fill this 18th-centur y Spanish house,
which features a permanent collection of colonial art upstairs, and religious and contem-
porary art downstairs. Noteworthy pieces include a por trait of Francisco de Uriburu by
Spanish painter J oaquín S orolla y B astida, and a painting of S

Salta C athedral The corn-y ellow facade of this cathedral dominates the central
plaza. Inside you'll find beautiful interiors of ocher, blue, green, and gold with angels and
cherubs smiling from the ornate ceiling corners. It holds a pantheon of Salta's luminaries,
including local fr eedom fighter and str ongman Martín Miguel de G üemes. There is a
lovely side gallery of arches and beautiful floor tiles and an elaborate pulpit is perched to
one side like a tiny gilded balcony.

San Bernardo Convent Salta's oldest r eligious building was declar ed a H is-
torical National Monument in 1941. I t's worthy of a walk b y to admire the city's most
impressive example of colonial and indigenous ar t (only Carmelite nuns ar e allowed to
enter). Indigenous craftsmen carved the entrance from a carob tree in 1762.

Teleférico (Salta Cable Car) Kids This Swiss-made, well-maintained cable car
has been in operation since 1987, ferrying tourists to the top of San Bernardo Hill, 300m
(984 ft.) over Salta. It is a pleasant ride up , though the frosted Perspex glass inhibits the
