Iglesia San Francisco (San Francisco Church) Rebuilt in 1759 after a fir e
destroyed the original building, the Iglesia San Francisco is Salta's most prominent post-
card image. The terra-cotta facade, with its 53m (174-ft.) to wer and tiered white pillars,
was designed by architect Luis Giorgi. The belfry—the tallest in the Americas—holds the
Campana de la Patria, a bronze bell made from the cannons used in the War of Indepen-
dence's B attle of S alta. A small museum exhibits a v ariety of 17th- and 18th-centur y
religious images.

Museo de A rqueológia de A lta Mon taña ( Andean A rchaeological
Museum) A beautifully restored historic building, the MAAM houses a good
collection of Andean textiles woven over the years. This museum is also home to a large
research library dedicated to Andean cultur e and anthr opology. The main focus of the
museum, however, is its thr ee mountain mummies, the per fectly preserved remains of
three Inca children sacrificed to the gods. A fascinating film sho ws the ex cavations at
Mount Llullaillaco, the highest v olcanic peak in Argentina, near the Chilean bor der,
which displays the actual extraction of the bodies fr om their mountain r efuge. The
Andean mummies (o ver 500 y ears old) w ere found in 1999 b y a National Geographic
