El Moño Rojo ARGENTINE/INTERNATIONAL An enormous restaurant com-
plex overlooking the waterfront near the Estación Fluvial, this is one of the best places to
come for a meal with enter tainment. The atmosphere is brilliantly red, festive, and very
kitschy, full of posters of tango stars, pictur es of Argentine actors and actr esses, and old
Peronist memorabilia. On Friday they stage a tango show. The food is a mixture of pizzas,
snacks, sandwiches, and traditional parrilla grilled meat, so there should be something to
please everyone here.

5 COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO, URUGUAY
140km (87 miles) W of Buenos Aires
The tiny gem of Colonia del Sacramento, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO,
appears untouched by time. Dating from 1680, when it was established by Manuel Lobo
as a buffer colony b y the Portuguese against the S panish, the old city boasts beautifully
preserved colonial ar tistry down its quiet, bougainvillea-draped, cobblestone str eets. A
leisurely str oll into the Barrio H istorico (Historic N eighborhood) leads y ou under
flower-laden windo wsills to chur ches dating fr om the 1680s, past simple single-stor y
homes—from Colonia's time as a colonial settlement—and on to local museums detail-
ing the riches of the to wn's past. The B arrio H istorico contains brilliant examples of
colonial architecture and many of Uruguay's oldest structures. A mix of lovely shops, tiny
posadas, and delicious cafes and r estaurants makes the town more than a history lesson.
