Most of the buildings surrounding the square are modern. Among them is the

9 de Julio,
which is
really the continuation of Calle 21, connects the P laza Central with the beach. It's lined
with shops and ice-cream places. A few blocks away is
Iglesia San Antonio,
at the inter-
section of calles 22 and 29. Dating from 1891, it's a small cream-colored Spanish colonial
building that wouldn 't look out of place in the S outhern California suburbs. I t has a
simple interior with modern stained-glass windo ws and a wooden r oof. G iant holy
water-filled clam shells at the door casually r emind y ou that y ou're in a beach to wn.
Miramar also has a large summertime Jewish population, with the
Miramar Synagogue
serving as a community center. Its interior is small and star kly modern. It's on Calle 27,
between calles 14 and 15 (

miles) to the southw est of the to wn center, accessible b y foot
from many str eets and b y 4WD fr om Avenida 26, is the 80-hectar e (200-acre) forest
reserve
Vivero Dunícola Florentino Ameghino.
You can walk along the trails or take a
4WD dune ex cursion with P anda Viajes, mentioned in the “G etting Around” section
above. About 12km (7 miles) in the same direction is the historic town of
Mar del Sud,
full of inter esting turn-of-the-20th-centur y buildings. G olfers will want to head 2km

miles) northeast along the Atlantic coast from the center of town to

inaugural parade a fe w days before Christmas every year, which celebrates the season in

WHERE TO STAY
Refugio de Mar
This apartment/hotel complex is a great choice for families or large
groups. Each apartment is designed as its o wn
cabaña,
with two bathrooms, sleeping up
to six people. All apartments have wooden interiors, with green bedspreads and tile floors.
Apartments are fully stocked with dishes, an iron, a TV, and a DVD player. The two-level
apartments have balconies and face a central cour tyard with a heated outdoor pool, and
there is even a small gym and game r oom. Maid service and breakfast are included, but
the apartments rent out by the week, which is negotiable in lo w season.

Villasol Hostería
This is one of the nicest properties in Miramar, opened in 2006.
It's not dir ectly on the beach, but it 's very close, and its corner location pr ovides many
rooms with sea views. The pseudo-Victorian structure of the property gives it the feel of
an oversize bed-and-br eakfast. R ooms ar e large and hav e a neutral color pattern with
native accents, giving them a S outhwestern feel. All floors ar e terra-cotta tiled. B ath-
rooms are large, and some hav e hydro-massage tubs. A fe w rooms have balconies, with
wicker furniture so you can lounge in the sun or take in a vie w of the ocean. There are
two restaurants, one downstairs for lunch and dinner, offering simple international cui-
sine. The breakfast room, in the attic with terraces overlooking the ocean, is a delightful
place to start the morning. There is a small lounge and gym here too, along with a snack
bar. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but all come with fans. S ome of the rooms are also
apartments, with two bedrooms but without kitchens; they're good for families or groups
of friends.
