Pescadores Restaurant SEAFOOD You'll see this r estaurant the moment
you pull into M ar del P lata, only because it 's under the enormous Q uilmes neon bill-
board sign on the pier . This three-level restaurant juts into the ocean and is one of the
best seafood restaurants in town. Built into the Fisherman's Club, it's the next best thing
to catching the fish y ourself. Fish of all kinds—sole, salmon, calamari, lobster , oysters,
and everything else local or shipped in—is here. Landlubbers will find pasta, salads, and
parrilla offerings too, and some of the same sauces for fish double as pasta sauces. N atu-
rally, there are a lot of white wines on the menu. We list a high top price here, but most
main courses run about $10 (£6.80).

Torreon del Monje ARGENTINE It's har d not to notice this r estaurant in
Mar del P lata, inside a castlelike str ucture dating fr om 1904, o verlooking the A tlantic
Ocean. Day or night, the plate-glass windo ws over the sea and opening onto the str eet
offer a fantastic view. Food runs from simple sandwiches to a parrilla with steak, chicken,
and, of course, locally caught seafood. Almost each night, dinner sho ws take place while
you dine, beginning at 10pm. S ome are tango, others flamenco and folkloric. There is
no additional charge for the shows; they're part of the experience of dining here. If you've
dined elsewhere, stop in for drinks at the beautiful oak bar. During the day, many people
come for the flavored and alcoholic coffee specials in the Esmeralda lounge.

Nightlife follo ws closely behind beaches as M ar del P lata's biggest draw . I n summer,
theater companies leav e Buenos Aires to per form in this coastal r esort; ask the tourism
office for a schedule of per formance times and places. The city's most popular bars ar e
south of Plaza Mitre, off Calle San Luis. The best dance clubs are along Avenida Consti-
tución, 3km (2 miles) fr om do wntown, including Chocolate, Av. Constitución 4445

479-6666 ), featuring live rock music; and Sobremonte, Av. Constitución 6690 ( & 223/

of the most popular gay discos. Coyote Ugly Bar, Av. Constitución 6690 ( & 223/479-
2600 ), is a fav orite Mexican restaurant and bar, which br eaks into salsa and mer engue
dancing as the night goes on.

As Mar del P lata became mor e crowded and decidedly do wnscale, upper-middle-class
Porteños began looking for new vacation spots. Among them is Miramar, approximately
