Uploading a Database to a Remote Server
You must upload the database for the NextBest Fest site to your remote server so that it
can send data to and receive data from Web pages or Web applications. For example, in
the NextBest Fest site, the form in the contact.html page will send data to the database
that you place on the remote server.
If your instructor has already uploaded the database to your remote server, you should
read but not complete the next set of steps. In this case, you will be sharing the same
database with your classmates, so you might see data that you did not add in the data-
base or you might observe that data you added is removed. If you are uploading the
database on your remote server, you need to contact your ISP (or your IT department)
and have a technical support person create a directory named “Database” on the remote
server and provide you with the exact fi le path to the directory as well as the FTP host,
host directory, login, and password you should use. The directory must be writable by the
IUSR_SERVER account. (Instructors should verify that the new directory is accessible to
all their students.) After the database directory has been created, you can then upload the
nbf_db.mdb fi le located in the Tutorial.09\Tutorial folder included with your Data Files
to the database directory on the remote server.
The following steps show how to use Dreamweaver to FTP the database fi le to your
remote server. To do this you will add a server to the NextBest Fest site because the
database will, most likely, be located outside of the root folders that you designated for
the Next Best Fest site on your Web server. The new server will be set up to upload the
database to the correct folder on your remote Web server. If your instructor has already
uploaded the database for you, read the following steps and then continue working in
the “Connecting a Web Site to a Database” section on page 537.
To upload the database to the Web server:
1. On the Application bar, click Site , and then click Manage Sites . The Manage Sites
dialog box opens.
2. Edit the NextBest Fest site, then select the Servers tab and click the Add new
Server button
See Figure 9-24.
