play remains the same.
Creating Alternate Styles and Alternate
Style Sheets
Many Web sites use alternate print styles or alternate print style sheets to customize the
display of pages for print. Before creating alternate styles or style sheets, you should
understand how alternate styles and style sheets work.
Understanding Alternate Styles
When creating alternate styles in a style sheet, a good practice is to group all the alter-
nate styles for media types in one section at the end of the style sheet. Remember, style
sheets are cascading. When you group the alternate styles at the end of the style sheet,
the default style is read fi rst and used by all the designated media types, then the alter-
nate style is read and overrides the default style only for the designated alternate media
types. Grouping styles also helps you to maintain an organized style sheet.
When an alternate style affects many selectors, a good practice is to create one
alternate style for the group of selectors. For example, designers commonly create an
alternate style that changes the font color of all text to black for print—thus, one style
includes the group of all selectors that have a text color attribute.
Finally, when creating alternate styles, use the same selector names as in the main
style sheet to avoid potential confl icts and confusion.
Surround all alternate
styles for a media type
with a media tag designat-
ing that type.
