Editing a Library Item
When you edit a library item, every instance of the library item in the site is updated at
one time. This is faster and more accurate than editing the same element in many pages.
For example, to change the footer content to include an e-mail link (a link in a browser
window that a user can click to start his or her default e-mail program and open a blank
message window with the e-mail address from the link entered in the To fi eld), you make
the change only once in the library item and Dreamweaver changes the footer in every
page that includes the footer library item. To create a unique version of the library item,
such as changing the footer content on only one page, you must replace the library item
with the unique version.
Gage wants the footer to include an e-mail link so users can quickly contact the com-
pany. This way, users can easily provide feedback about the site or request information.
To edit the nb_footer library item:
1. With the nb_footer library item selected in the Document window, click the
Open button in the Property inspector. The nb_footer library item opens in the
Document window. The text is not styled because the style sheet is not attached
to the library item. When you view the library item in the pages, it will again dis-
play the appropriate style. See Figure 6-10.
You can also double-click
a library item in the library
to open the item.
