Adding and Editing a Meta Description
Many search engines also use the meta description to index Web pages. A meta
description is a short summary of the Web page that is placed in the meta tag with the
attribute name=”description” . The description should contain a concise summary of the
site's content and goals. For example, the NextBest Fest site description will be “NextBest
Fest music festival is dedicated to promoting the live performance of great music by
the best tribute bands in the world. Our mission is to expose the world to exceptional
music from all eras and genres and to keep music alive through the oral tradition of live
performance.” Some search engines also display the fi rst part of the description in the
search results page when a user looks up a word or phrase. Therefore, it is a good idea to
use the fi rst line or two of the description as a short caption for the site. Think of it as a
newspaper headline, summarizing the highlights of the page content. Some engines also
penalize a page with very long descriptions, so you should make your description fairly
short—no more than six average lines of text.
