Case Problem 1
Plan and design
a Web site for
an independent
skateboard
company.
Data Files needed for this Case Problem: bg.jpg, moebius.docx
Moebius Skateboards To initiate the planning and design for the Web site you are cre-
ating for Moebius, you asked Corey to provide you with a list of site goals, ideas on a
target audience, and the material that he wants to include on the site. Corey responds
with a memo that outlines the decisions he has made so far. You will use the information
from the memo to plan the Web site. Corey, however, did not provide all the requested
information (a common occurrence when working with clients). You will use the infor-
mation that was provided as a starting point. It will be necessary for you to research and
make some decisions on your own.
1. In Microsoft Word or another word processing program, open the moebius.docx fi le
located in the Tutorial.02\Case1 folder included with your Data Files, and then read
the memo.
2. Review the goals that Corey listed, and then create a list of site goals for the Web
site. Consider the order of importance and wording.
3. Defi ne a target audience and a user profi le for the site. ( Hint : Search online sources
to learn more about the groups of people listed in the memo.)
4. Conduct market research. Find and review at least four Web sites owned by skate-
board companies or that provide information on skateboarding and the skate culture.
5. Write a paragraph documenting the fi ndings from your market research. Include the
URLs of the Web sites that you visited as well as information about categories of
information, graphic style, layout, and site metaphor.
6. Create three end-user scenarios for the site.
7. Develop an information category outline. Base the categories and hierarchy on the
memo and your market research.
8. Create a fl owchart for the site.
9. Develop a site concept and metaphor for the site. (Even sites that have minimal
design can benefi t from a site metaphor.)
10. Investigate usability guidelines that deal with text. Research these guidelines at
www.w3.org/WAI . Write down your fi ndings and use them when making font
choices.
11. Design a color palette for the site. Write a paragraph explaining your choice.
12. Choose the fonts for the site. Write a paragraph explaining your choices.
13. Plan the graphic style of the site. Write a paragraph explaining your choice.
14. Create a rough sketch of the layout of the site. Write a paragraph explaining
your choice.
15. Check the design for logic by reviewing the decisions that you have made. Make
sure that your design reinforces the site goals and supports the site metaphor.
16. Set up the site, using Moebius Skateboards as the site name and moebius\web as
the local site folder in the folder and location where you are storing your Web site.
Create a folder named graphics in the local root folder and select that folder as the
default images folder. Use case-sensitive link checking and enable cache.
17. Set up a Live Server using FTP access for the Moebius site.
18. Create an HTML page for the home page using index.html as the fi lename. Open the
page in the Document window, and then enter Moebius - Home as the page title.
19. In the Page Properties dialog box, in the Appearance (CSS) category, set the back-
ground image to the bg.jpg fi le located in the Tutorial.02\Case1 folder included
with your Data Files. Select repeat from the Repeat list, use the default font for the
page font, set the text color to #66ff33, and set the text size to 12. Set the link color,
