In this part of the world questions of ethnicity are so thickly embroiled with history,
politics and religion that discussions of identity can be a minefield. This is, after all,
where phrases like 'ethnic cleansing' were first invented. Yet to an outsider, the more
you travel in the Balkans, the more you're struck by the similarities between its vari-
ous peoples: the warm hospitality, the close family bonds, the social conservatism, the
fiery temper, and the passionate approach to life.
Football (soccer), basketball, water polo and handball are the national sporting obsessions. Current big-
name footballers include Mirko Vučinić (Juventus FC), Stevan Jovetić (ACF Fiorentina) and Simon
Vukčević (Blackburn Rovers). Montenegrins playing in American NBA squads include Orlando Magic's
Nikola Vučević and Minnesota Timberwolves' Nikola Peković.
