formed.
TIMELINE
300 BC
Illyrian tribes achieve supremacy in the Balkans, founding city states (including one at Lake Skadar
near the modern Montenegro-Albania border) and establishing themselves as maritime powers in
the Adriatic.
231-228 BC
Illyrian Queen Teuta establishes her base at Risan and pirates under her command roam the Adriat-
ic, harrying the Romans, among others. Eventually the Romans bring her reign to an end.
AD 100
Doclea (present-day Podgorica), a settlement established by the Illyrians, grows to become a signi-
ficant city under Roman rule. It is home to up to 10,000 people.
395
The Roman Empire is divided into two. Present-day Croatia and Bosnia land in the western half and
Serbia in the eastern Byzantine Empire, while Montenegro sits on the dividing line.
614
The Avars sack the Roman cities of Salona (Split) and Epidaurum (Cavtat). The Slavic tribes follow
in their wake, either as invited defenders or as opportunistic vacuum-fillers.
800s
The first Serbian entity, Raška, arises near what is now the Serbian city of Novi Pazar. It is
squeezed between the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires.
869
At the behest of Byzantium, Macedonian monks Methodius and Cyril create the Glagolitic alphabet,
precursor of the Cyrillic alphabet, to help speed the spread of Christianity among the Slavic
peoples.
